Bodegas Raúl Pérez

Raúl Pérez is wat je noemt een markant wijnmaker. Hoewel hij klassiek geschoold is (oenologie in Requena), is zijn werkwijze dat allesbehalve. Liever dan de gebaande paden volgt Raúl de natuur. Hij máákt geen wijn, maar laat de wijn zichzelf tot uitdrukking brengen door de bodemtypes, microklimaten en rijpingstijden van de druiven te observeren en het druivenmateriaal zo min mogelijk te beïnvloeden.

Deze onorthodoxe, intuïtieve werkwijze levert unieke, pure, nauwelijks te beschrijven terroirwijnen op, die Raúl op hun beurt een absolute cultstatus hebben bezorgd. Hij wordt gezien als een van de meest visionaire wijnmakers ter wereld, voorvechter van Het Nieuwe Spanje, hervormer van zijn geboortestreek Bierzo en de belangrijkste wijnmaakconsultant van Noordwest-Spanje. Decanter omschrijft hem als ‘the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius’, The Wine Advocate beoordeelde tientallen van Raúls wijnen. De sympathieke en bescheiden Raúl lijkt er zich weinig aan gelegen te laten liggen. Wijn is wat zijn rusteloze, innovatieve geest bezighoudt.

Zijn thuishaven is Valtuille de Abajo. Hier bezit zijn familie reeds sinds 1725 Castro Ventosa en begon Raúl zijn carrière. In 2003 lanceerde hij zijn eerste eigen project, de iconische Ultreia-reeks. Ook maakt hij hier de exclusieve single vineyard-serie La Vizcaina. Maar één wijstreek is natuurlijk niet afdoende voor een fenomeen als Pérez. Behalve briljante Bierzo (co)creëert Raúl ook wijnen in o.a. Rías Baixas (met Rodrigo Méndez van Forjas del Salnés) Ribeira Sacra, Portugal (met Dirk van der Niepoort) en Zuid-Afrika (met Eben Sadie). Altijd op zoek naar de ultieme terroirexpressie.

The 2023 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a more herbaceous nose, from old vines that might have 5% of white grapes. It's a wet year in a wet place, a vineyard that retains very well the water in drier years. It has a different expression that seems to transcend the place and vintage (Raúl Pérez compared it with the 2013), and it's more aromatic. I still think this plot behaves better in drier years...

In the rainy 2023, they selected from the many plots in different lieux-dits of Valtuille, which this year included El Val and El Cepón in Villafranca, mostly from very old vines, with 50% of the grapes purchased from growers. It fermented mostly with full clusters and had a long maceration and matured in used barrels. It has contained ripeness and less than 13% alcohol...
