Bierzo

Bierzo is een Spaanse Denominación de Origen in het noordwesten van Castilla y León. De wijngaarden liggen er goed beschut tegen zowel de kou die vanaf de Atlantische Oceaan binnenstroomt als de hitte die vanaf de Meseta komt, het centrale plateau in het binnenland van Spanje. In Bierzo zijn bodems van leisteen en graniet te vinden, waarop de blauwe druif mencía het goed doet. De wijnen van dit echt plaatselijke ras hebben een fris en levendig karakter, met volop fruit en een markante minerale ondertoon.

The 2023 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a more herbaceous nose, from old vines that might have 5% of white grapes. It's a wet year in a wet place, a vineyard that retains very well the water in drier years. It has a different expression that seems to transcend the place and vintage (Raúl Pérez compared it with the 2013), and it's more aromatic. I still think this plot behaves better in drier years...
